How this place is kept
A short, human set of expectations — and what happens when they’re not met.
plaintext is invite-only and tended by one host, by hand. There is no rules engine, no filter scanning your posts for banned words, no committee, and no appeals board — every removal begins the same way: someone presses Report, I read what happened, and I make a judgment call. This isn’t a public square; it’s an experiment in civility. You’re a guest here, and so is everyone else.
Be cool, and use your words. Hold unpopular opinions and defend them; argue passionately, and change someone’s mind if you can. What you can’t do is make another person the target of your contempt — the line is how you talk to people, not what you believe. Beyond that, the only hard limit is the law: genuinely illegal content is removed, no discussion.
It’s easier to show than to define. These two comments argue for exactly the same position. One belongs here; the other doesn’t.
A take I’ll defend: people should be allowed to get paid for donating a kidney. Thousands die on the waiting list every year while it’s illegal to pay the one person who could save them. “You can’t put a price on the body” sounds principled right up until you’re the one on dialysis. Iran allows it and cleared its backlog. We let people take far more dangerous jobs for money and call it a living.
A real argument, made in good faith. You might think it’s morally bankrupt; someone else might think it’s obviously right. Good — that’s the point. Nobody is being treated as though they’re beneath the conversation.
lmao it took you this long to figure this out? They teach supply and demand to high-school freshmen. You’re hopeless. Stop embarrassing yourself and let the adults talk. Every time you post you somehow make everyone else a little dumber.
Same opinion, same conclusion — a different outcome. There’s no argument here anymore, just contempt for the person on the other end. That’s the whole difference.
Nothing here is watched. Posts aren’t scanned before they go up, and no one is reading over your shoulder; every moderation decision starts because a member quietly pressed Report and, if they felt like it, added a line of context. If nobody reports something, no one is looking for it — the place stays civil because the people in it choose to keep it that way, not because they’re being monitored.
Not every report leads to a removal. Being blunt isn’t bannable, being sarcastic isn’t bannable, and being wrong isn’t bannable. The bar is cruelty, contempt, or the kind of behavior that poisons a conversation — not simply making someone uncomfortable. The point was never to prevent disagreement; it’s to keep disagreement worth having.
If you’re removed and you genuinely think I got it wrong, email me. A person — not an automated system — reads it. You get one review, and that decision is final.
If this sounds too strict, too subjective, or like too much rests on one person’s judgment — that’s a completely fair thing to think, and there are enormous platforms built around solving exactly that. This isn’t trying to be one of them. It’s trying to be a place where people write honestly, disagree openly, and leave feeling like they spent time with other human beings instead of surviving another day on the modern internet. The rules are simple, the judgment is human, and the goal was never perfect consistency — just a place worth coming back to tomorrow.
